Chathura Bandutunga

Australian National University

Chathura P. Bandutunga received his PhD in physics in 2020 from The Australian National University. His research has focused on the development of interferometric metrology techniques for high resolution optical sensors. He currently leads the Applied Metrology Laboratory, the applications-focused research theme within the ANU Centre for Gravitational Astrophysics. Chathura’s work spans projects in fiber optic sensing, optical spectroscopy, coherent beam combination and laser frequency metrology.

His primary research focuses on the integration of digital modulation techniques to augment optical systems and enable the synthesis of novel interferometric sensing architectures. Among his projects, Chathura is a founder and CTO of Forge Photonics PTY LTD, developing novel optical gyroscope solutions for automotive applications and has led the ANU Breakthrough Starshot research program since 2021, developing phase metrology solutions for large scale optical phased arrays.
